On 6th July 2012, Marc Grayston, Chief Instructor of Maru Karate Kai was one of the Olympic Torchbearers and ran with the Torch in his hometown of Basildon.

Marc was nominated by some parents at his class, who wanted to recognise the work he had put into building it since he took over in 2009.

The nomination was originally made through the Lloyds TSB Community programme and LOCOG confirmed the nomination in November 2011.

The run itself was on of the highlights of the Torch Relay in Basildon and saw Marc run with the Torch through the newly built Basildon Sporting Village. The run saw Marc travel through the Olympic sized swimming pool, high-fiving the Japanese Olympic Swimming Team who are currently training there.

Marc then ran out onto the running track to a plethora of dignitaries from the local area including the Mayor of Basildon - Councillor Mo Larkin, Stephen Metcalfe MP, Mark Francois MP, various staff from Basildon Council and the management team from Basildon Sporting Village. Marc was also joined by 60 of his closest friends and family, as well as 200 children and teachers who had been specially chosen to attend the event.
